The Spy House, also known as the DuMond House or the Guard House, was built some time between about 1680 and about 1720. It may be the oldest continuously occupied private residence in New York State. It was built by the DuMond/VanEtten family, and in the 1930s was purchased by the Kent family. It was serving as the local militia company's guardhouse when a British soldier captured as a spy was held here for several days before being hanged from an apple tree across the street.
